Case study

Case study: how we automated an ecommerce's pricing on Shopify

Selling branded products with tight margins is hard: undercut the market and you lose money, price too high and you don't sell. We solved it with automated pricing on a Shopify store that adjusts prices by itself to protect the margin. This is what we built and what we learned along the way.

The challenge: branded products, thin margins

The client sold premium branded goods in a competitive market. Set the price too high and the sale walked away to a cheaper rival; set it too low and the margin vanished. Doing it by hand across the whole catalog, every day, was simply not realistic.

The solution: Shopify plus automated pricing

We set up a system that scrapes the manufacturer's reference prices, compares them with the Spanish market and adjusts each product's price automatically to keep around a 20% margin. When the market moves, the price moves with it, up or down, without anyone touching it.

The store runs on Shopify because the goal was simple: get selling, with control over the numbers and no fragile setup to babysit.

The result: from 0 to ~€3,000/month

From launch to ~€3,000/month in under a year

With a margin that holds on its own, because the pricing adjusts to the market instead of going stale.

In under a year the store went from zero to around €3,000/month, holding its margin without manual price-watching. The owner stopped worrying about being undercut, because the system reacts to the market faster than a person ever could.

What we learned

  • Automating pricing frees up the part that actually matters: strategy and product, not chasing competitor prices all day.
  • The margin has to be designed in, not hoped for. Once the rule is clear, the machine enforces it every single day.
  • It scales. The same logic works for 50 products or 5,000.

If you sell in a price-sensitive market, automated pricing is one of the highest-leverage moves you can make: you protect the margin without living glued to your competitors' prices. It's part of what we do inside ecommerce SEO and Universo Ecommerce.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. With the right setup, prices adjust on their own based on market and margin rules, so you don't have to monitor competitors manually or update prices one by one.

The system compares your cost and the market reference, then sets a price that keeps your target margin. When the market moves, the price moves with it, up or down, automatically.

No. Shopify makes it convenient, but the same pricing logic can be applied to other platforms. What matters is defining the margin rule clearly.
